'field of color'

There is no story-telling behind these works. These are just traces that are scattered on the 'field of color' by me who enjoys to express various emotions like stillness, tranquility and contemplation after emptying my mind. Although the 'field of color' is not precisely defined, it is the emotion we can feel, such as joy, warmth, depth, loneliness, and serenity. The purpose of these paintings are to express nothing, and in that sense, it can be called 'postmodern', but they are just an 'internal meditation', nothing more, nothing less.

Ataraxy - a state of serene calmness, tranquility of mind

이 작품들에는 어떤 이야기가 담겨 있지 않다. 이것은 정적과 고요와 사색을 즐기는 내가, 생각을 비운 후, 여러 가지 감정을 표현하는 '색의 장' 위에 흩뿌려 놓은 흔적일 뿐이다. '색의 장' 은 정확하게 정의되지는 않지만 우리가 느낄 수 있는 기쁨, 따뜻함, 깊음, 외로움, 평온 등의 감정이며 그 감정의 무의식 안에서 자유롭게 떠다니는 무형적인 선과 점과 형태들 안에서 심적인 고요를 들여다보고자 함이다. 이 그림들은 아무것도 표현하지 않는 것이 목적이고, 그런 면에서 'postmodern'이라고 할 수도 있겠지만, 그것보다는 '내적 사색', 그 이상도 이하도 아니다.

i want my paintings to breathe

When it comes to yin and yang, I am not a yang person, but a yi person. I prefer a quiet place, not a noisy or crowded place. I always get sick at night when I am busy or when the environment changes rapidly. I was like that on my wedding, after I was a bride maid for my friends, even after preparing for my daughter's birthday party, and after my friends came to my housewarming party. On those night I always vomited and lay sick. It's not that I hate or don't enjoy the moment. It's just my nerves... I couldn't handle the event, and even though I'm not stressed, it's probably because of my overly sensitive nerves. Yes! It's because of needlessly overactive nerves. Until now... even if there are no special events, I always vomit and lie down sick for whole day once or twice a month.

Maybe that's why... I want my paintings to breathe. An overly perfect realism is something my nerves can't handle. I want to be free in my paintings, but I don't want chaos and disorder. I just hope that my paintings will give you rest, no matter what form they take. The direction I want to take is to paint a picture that allows me to take a break from all this suffocating reality and existence.

나는 음, 양에 있어, 양적인 사람이 아니라 음적인 사람이다. 나는 시끄럽거나 사람이 많은 곳보다는, 한적하고 조용한 곳을 좋아한다. 나는 분주하거나, 급격히 환경이 바뀌면, 꼭 밤에 아파진다. 내 결혼식 때도 그랬고, 친구들을 위해 bride maid를 하고 나서도 그랬고, 딸아이의 생일 파티를 준비한 후에도, 친구들이 집들이를 하러 온 후에도, 꼭 밤이 되면 토하고 앓아눕는다. 그것은 내가 그 순간을 싫어하거나 즐기지 않아서가 아니다. 그저 나의 신경이... event를 감당하지 못하게 생겨 먹어서이고, 스트레스를 받는 것이 아닌데도, 지나치게 예민하게 구는 신경 때문인듯하다. 그렇다! 쓸데없이 신경이 과민하게 구는 탓이다. 지금까지도... 난 특별한 이벤트가 없어도, 한 달에 한두 번은 꼭 토하고 앓아눕는다.

완벽한 리얼리즘은 내 신경이 감당하지 못하는 영역이다. 난 내 그림 안에서 자유롭고 싶지만, 그렇다고 해서, 혼란과 무질서를 원하지는 않는다. 그저 어떤 형식이 되었건 간에, 내 그림을 통해 정신이 쉼을 얻길 바란다. 때로는 숨 막혀 오는 이 모든 현실과 실존의 틈바구니에서 잠시 쉬어갈 수 있는 그런 그림을 그리는 것이다 내가 원하는 방향이다.

a quiet meditation that looks into the unconscious

The world is changing so fast, and we live in a generation where people are frantically busy. A self-portrait of a modern person is sometimes marvelous and sometimes pitiful. When the sun rises and morning comes, the sky surrounds us cheerfully with the dazzling blue sky or sometimes warmly with a cloudy sky like an achromatic ink painting. With these blessed days, the wind clears up our minds and we live without feeling anything. The sound of birds singing the song of life, and the movement of the wind that evokes our spirit, so I would like to find rest in a more static rather than dynamic formative beauty. The round shapes recall the infinite energy like the sun and moon, a few small dots are the remnants of a certain memory that suddenly passes, and the flowing lines are an unknown, inexpressible sinking thought within me. They are the footsteps of a quiet meditation that looks into the unconscious. Sometimes like a wave, sometimes like music, sometimes like the wind, sometimes like a fragrance, sometimes like love, sometimes like freedom, softly and calmly I wish it is looking into the stillness within me and reach peace...

세상은 너무 빠르게 변화하고, 사람들은 정신없이 바쁘기만 한, 아주 숨 가쁜 세대를 살아가는 우리 현대인의 모습이 가끔은 경이롭고, 또 때로는 안쓰럽다. 해가 떠오르고 아침이 오면, 어쩔 땐 눈부신 푸른 하늘로 명랑하게, 어쩔 땐 무채색의 수묵 담채화 같은 구름 낀 하늘로 따뜻하게, 우리를 감싸주는 '하늘'. 그 좋은 하늘 아래, 우리의 정신을 환기 시키는 바람의 운행을, 우리는 제대로 느끼고 살지 못할 때가 많기에, 나는 동적이기보다는 좀 더 정적인 조형미 안에서 쉼을 찾아보고자 한다. 동그라미는 우리에게 해, 달 같은 무한한 에너지를 떠오르게 하며, 몇 개의 점들은 문득문득 지나가는 어떤 기억의 잔재이며, 흘러내리듯 이어지는 선들은 알 수 없고, 표현할 수 없는 내 안의 가라앉을 듯 이어지는 어떤 상념의 발자취이다. 무의식 안을 들여다보는 조용한 명상이다. 때로는 물결같이, 때로는 음악같이, 때로는 바람같이, 때로는 향기같이, 때로는 사랑같이, 때로는 자유같이, 부드럽고 차분하게 내 안의 고요를 들여다보며 평화에 이르기를....

the direction of recent my works

Currently, I am working in two directions. One is an emotional approach with a certain topic by using rich textures and acrylic paints to express it freely, and the other is to express the unconscious stage rationally. After I paint the background with an oil paint and make it dry, I express my inner subjective inevitability on the deep background color, but it shows the consciousness of the self, which starts from the original impulse. Without being swayed by other people's tastes, I want to bring about purification of consciousness while implementing a refined order with only my own intellectual judgment. For me, it is more difficult to express by stop adding things that are necessary than by adding more things to express. It requires a greater courage.

요즘은 두 가지 방향으로 작업을 하고 있다. 하나는 rich 한 텍스처와 아크릴 물감을 사용하여 어떠한 단상에 대해 감성적으로 접근하여, 자유롭게 표현하는 방식이고, 다른 하나는 무의식의 단상을 이성적으로 표현하고자 하는 것인데, 우선, 유화로 밑 색을 칠해서 일주일 정도 잘 말린 후, 그 깊은 색감 위에 내 내면의 주관적 필연성을 표현하되, 원초적 충동으로부터 시작되는, 자아의 의식을 보이게 하는 것이다. 다른 사람들의 취향에 휘둘리지 않고, 오직 나 자신의 지적 판단력으로, 정제된 질서를 구현하되, 의식의 정화를 불러오고자 한다. 나에겐 무엇을 더 하여 표현하는 것보다, 무엇을 더 하지 않은 상태에서, 멈춤으로써 표현해 내는 것이 더 어렵고, 큰 용기가 필요하다.

if you can talk about it, why paint it?

I paint the first layer of oil paint(background)on the canvas. The canvas should be dried at least for 6 days in the backyard. I put it under the warm warmth of the sun where the moderate wind passes, and let it hear the most beautiful sound of birdsong. When it is ready to move on to the next step, I think about thickness, color, how and where should I put a ‘Line'. I stare on the canvas for a while (an hour or so). When I am done thinking, I take a deep breath, calming my mind to encourage myself. In some ways, it's just a canvas with a background color on it, but I waited for 6 days to finish the first part to move on to the next step, so I should be extremely rational, and sharp in order to avoid the unfortunate situation of ruining the canvas, wasting time, and wasting the canvas.

Drawing a single line takes a lot of time to consider. This is because everything has to be done precisely and at once. This is an act of improvisation with a consciousness of the impulse each time. What I do is not a figurative work, but in many ways I agree greatly with Francis Bacon's idea of art. He has already said many of the thoughts I am about to say. Here are the quotes:

Just one dot, one shape and one line, but in between all the steps, an invisible intermission is an inevitable.

밑 색을 칠한다. 적어도, 6일은 매일 마당에서 햇볕의 따뜻한 온기와 적당한 바람과, 새소리를 들려준다. 다음 단계로 넘어갈 준비를 바치면, 그 위에, 어떤 두께의, 어떤 위치에 어떤 어울리는 색의 선 'Line'을 시작할지 고민한다. 한 시간 정도, 캔버스를 응시한다. 고민을 마치면, 심호흡을 하고, 마음을 가라앉히고, 스스로에게 용기를 불어 넣는다. 보기에 따라서는 아무것도 아닌 밑 색을 칠한 캔버스일 뿐이지만, 그 밑 작업을 위해 6일을 기다린 나는, 저 캔버스를 망쳐서 시간도 버리고, 캔버스도 버리는 안타까운 상황을 피하기 위해, 극도로, 이성적이고, 날카롭게 그림을 시작한다.

선을 하나 그리는 일도 시간이 꽤나 소요된다. 모든 것이 정확하고 정교하게, 한 번에 끝나야 하기 때문이다. 그때그때 마다의 충동은 즉흥적이면서, 또한 나의 살아있는 의식을 부여하는 과정이 담겨 있다. 내가 하는 것은 Figurative work 가 아니지만, 난 많은 부분에서 Francis Bacon이 생각하는 예술에 대한 생각에 크게 공감한다. 그는 내가 말하고자 하는 많은 생각들을 이미 말하고 있다. 여기 짧은 Quotes를 적어 본다.

Shape 하나, 선 하나를 그리면서도 그 모든 스텝 사이엔, 보이지 않는 인터미션 (intermission)이 필수 요건이다.
